Package deals are generally better value if you are booking a last minute getaway whereas booking your travel and accommodation separately can turn out to be quite expensive. Check exactly what is included in the package to see if extras like hotel transfers and meals are included, and if there are any additional costs like administration or booking fees that could drive up the overall cost of the trip. Packages ranged from $400 (my target price) to $600 (out of my price range), but the choice of flight schedules and hotels was mediocre. If I wanted to arrive late in the afternoon (thereby missing one day of vacation), and stay on the outskirts of town (which would add transportation costs to and from the French Quarter), Expedia offered the best price.

Some agents are flexible and you can choose which of the contracted hotels you are most interested in. Some countries charge a separate departure tax that is collected at the Airport and typically must be paid for in the local currency. This tax is not included in your fare.
